A Tribute to Frau Elsbeth Stoiber: The Woman Who Breathed Life into Her Garden

Some people leave an indelible mark on our lives, even after they’re no longer with us. Frau Elsbeth Stoiber (December 25, 1924 – October 25, 2014) is one such person for me. I first met her over 15 years ago during a chance encounter on a walk. What began as a casual conversation blossomed into a beautiful friendship, rooted in our shared love of nature and plants.

Frau Stoiber was renowned among gardening enthusiasts in Switzerland for her extraordinary „Rosen-Stöckli Garden“ near the Albis Pass. For decades, this oasis was home to over 200 different plant species, including heirloom roses, medicinal herbs, lilies, shrub peonies, and her two prized tulip trees. Her garden wasn’t merely a collection of flora; it was her sanctuary—a place of tranquility and connection to the world beyond.

One of the garden’s most cherished features was the „Rosen-Stöckli,“ a naturally formed rose hybrid that Frau Stoiber discovered. This simple yet robust climbing rose, with its delicate white and pink blossoms, became a symbol of her legacy. She gifted me a cutting of this special rose, which has since flourished in my own garden. Through this rose, Frau Stoiber’s spirit lives on. Over the years, I have shared its beauty with friends in Switzerland and abroad, ensuring that her story and passion endure far beyond her lifetime.

Sitting with Frau Stoiber in her garden was a privilege. Her wisdom and stories, shared amidst the fragrance of blooming roses, left an indelible impression on me.
